Drugs in schools

Most drug violations in CPS involve an ounce or less of marijuana. Schools are quick to call police, yet rarely have the resources to offer education, counseling or other non-punitive help to students.

Timeline: The school closings debate

CPS is expected to announce its final list of planned school closures in March. Here’s a timeline tracing the last two years of closings under Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Final School Closing List is Done

I am so glad that the prolong of school closing is over with. CPS has been in the red long enough, that the schools being close will help reduce the red ink. That money will be better used now on schools that are maintaining good student attendance level. This action will not balance the budget, but it will help. No family will ever be happy about losing their neighborhood school, but it happens and we all have to move forward and make adjustments for it.

Exactly how does this help?

Exactly how does this help? There is no evidence in DC, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia or Chicago that suggests this move helps the education system. As a matter of fact since the strike Rahm and his BOE have been countered by researchers and practitioners at some of the best institutions (Including his daughter's own Chicago Lab School). It is already known the receiving schools are performing no better than the closing schools, and some are performing worse than the closing schools.

One of the few if not the only urban community to undergo true education reform is Union City, NJ. Unfortunately there's too much corruption, classism and special interest for this to happen nationally. Like many poor urban communities, Chicago's local government is corrupt and should go under investigation but that will never happen.
