CTU files strike notice
The Chicago Teachers Union has filed an official 10-day strike notice with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, union leaders announced.
No date for a strike has been set. The earliest teachers could walk out is Sept. 10. The union’s House of Delegates will meet tomorrow evening to discuss next steps, the union said in a press release.
Earlier today, anticipating the filing, CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll issued this statement: “If the Chicago Teachers Union chooses to strike, we'll be prepared to serve our kids. Students can't afford to be removed from their classroom at a time when they're starting to make progress with the Full School Day. They belong in school with their teachers, which is why we need to stay at the table and keep negotiating, every day if needed, until we reach a fair resolution as a strike would only hurt our kids.”
A strike would be the first in Chicago since 1987. “This is a difficult decision for all of us to make,” said union President Karen Lewis. “But this is the only way to get the Board’s attention and show them we are serious about getting a fair contract which will give our students the resources they deserve.”
More to come.

Job Well Done.......
I'm so very proud to be a CTU member. We did everything that was asked of us and followed the law outlined by SB7. We rose to the occasion and refused to be treated like charter school employees. Last Friday I stood with my colleagues and protested at a school on the westside. I was surprised and overjoyed by the support of parents standing with us, honking their horns, and telling us to keep fighting. We're not the enemy and parents are smart enough to see it. We're ready strike. Let's go!!!
I am disgusted at the Chicago
I am disgusted at the Chicago teachers union. It is obvious that all they care about is themselves and their wallets. As far as I am concerned they are already overpaid for what they do . . . which isn't much once you look at the chicago student's test scores compared to national test scores.
Yawn
Please Anonymous, go sign up to work in a Chicago Public School. Emanuel thinks anyone can teach better than an experienced veteran teacher. Keep a blog and tell us how things go for you.
Also, advise us about the job you have now where you don't worry about yourself or your wallet.
Or...shut up.
Anonymous coward
Tell us, Anonymous, how you come by your great wisdom, though you are too cowardly to state your name? My guess is that when you grow up you will regret your callow unthinking comments.
