Teacher evaluation program shows promising results

It’s a common refrain among some education policymakers: The way to get high-quality teachers is by offering pay for performance or instituting turnarounds to sweep in new faculties.

Yet the first study of a promising pilot program to overhaul teacher evaluation suggests that policymakers should turn to teachers themselves to have the best shot at weeding out poor performers and helping lackluster teachers improve.

In the News: CPS borrowing plan; wi-fi on school buses

Chicago Public Schools officials revealed Friday that they plan to borrow up to $800 million to pay their bills — even as they pledged to give teachers a promised 4 percent pay hike, a move designed to head off a strike, the Sun-Times reports.

Friday's runoff election was a near sweep for the Caucus of Rank and File Educators (CORE) team of Karen Lewis for President, Jesse Sharkey for Vice-President, Michael Brunson for Recording Secretary and Kristine Mayle for Financial Secretary, which beat the United Progressive Caucus (UPC) team led by two-term CTU President Marilyn Stewart. In the News: Online summer school; cheating by educators

Chicago public high school students will be able to take online courses this summer for classes they failed, a move that Mayor Daley hopes will save money. (Chicago Tribune)

*Related: The online program is split into four different tracks to provide the most individualized instruction possible, according to a CPS press release.

The Tribune also reported on an alumni group from DuSable High School that's seeking landmark status for the institution, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. The group last month applied to the city's Commission on Chicago Landmarks.

On this Monday’s edition of CNN Newsroom, Tony Harris interviews U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan about his mission to increase African-American male educators in America’s public schools. The interview airs June 14 on CNN Newsroom, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (ET). An analysis in the 2009 Summer edition of Catalyst Indepth revealed that the numbers of African-American male teachers dwindled during Duncan's tenure in Chicago.

In the News: Science education; pension data

The Museum of Science and Industry on Wednesday honored four city and one suburban school for their commitment to science education by allowing their teachers to participate in Museum courses for four years. The four Chicago Public Schools are Anderson Community Academy, Dixon Elementary, Gallistel Language Academy, Sawyer Elementary, and the Berwyn school is Heritage Middle. (media release)

The Sun-Times and suburban Pioneer local papers are making available online a searchable database of teacher pensions by name, school district and salary range. (Pioneer Local)
