Even as CPS opens more new schools, children with special needs have a tougher time finding options. Placements in private therapeutic schools are scarce, and some charters are reluctant to enroll them.

In the News: Lewis says she's not stepping down
Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, says she isn’t stepping down over an “inappropriate” joke she made about Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
While her remarks were insensitive, they were just 120 seconds of her 35-minute speech at a social justice event in Seattle last month, Lewis said Wednesday. (Sun-Times)
The Tribune's story on Lewis' press conference Wednesday quoted Julie Woestehoff, executive director of the parents' advocacy group PURE, who said the union president's toughness is needed in a time of crisis. "[Lewis] and the union are in an uphill battle; teachers all over the country are under attack by very powerful people, including Rahm Emanuel," Woestehoff said. "Just taking the calm and measured approach is not going to fight off the slings and arrows that are coming at you."
Chicago Public Schools approved at its monthly meeting Wednesday an initiative to move to a single application process for all CPS high schools starting next fall. The move will make it easier for parents whose children are transitioning from elementary to high school in the fall of 2013. School officials said in a press release that the announcement is a "major step in the new leadership’s efforts to create a more transparent and streamlined system to improve school quality in every neighborhood."
The Chicago Board of Education on Wednesday heard arguments for and against upcoming school closings. CPS Portfolio Officer Oliver Sicat said the district wants to close struggling schools and open new options in their place. (WBEZ)

Congress on Monday blocked rules proposed by the Agriculture Department that would have overhauled the nation’s school lunch program, giving a victory to makers of frozen pizzas, tomato paste and French fries. Food companies including ConAgra, Coca-Cola, Del Monte Foods and makers of frozen pizza like Schwan argued that the proposed rules would raise the cost of meals and require food that many children would throw away. A new report from the National Center on Time & Learning, a research and advocacy group, makes the case for restructuring the school calendar to allow more learning time for science. (Education Week)

Enough is Enough
The entire Lewis video is totally inappropriate and an embarrassment. Mrs. Lewis has talked about the former president, Marilyn Stewart and even her own union employees. She states that they wanted "crazy things" like furs and to make the same money as CPS Officials. Well, everyone is not a socialist, communist or vegan. In fact we are the 99% who live a normal American life.
Karen has finally shown the side of herself that so many are familiar with. She is an insensitive bully and attacks people that she disagrees with.
She tries to be-little everyone that she feels doesn't have a title. This time it backfired on her. I was wondering when this would happen I was wondering when the fake media persona would wear out and the real Karen Lewis would emerge. I see that it didn't take long. Enough is Enough Karen. Maybe you won't step down but people will be calling for your resignation.
When Rahm cursed at Karen
When Rahm cursed at Karen Lewis, did anyone call for his resignation?
Not Really the Point
There were many teachers incensed by it, but that's not really the point. The teacher above, and many others on First Class (the CPS electronic bulletin board site) and the blogs, are Chicago Teachers Union members. They have a right to ask their President to resign if they feel it is in the best interests of the Union.
Personally, I think resignation is unwarranted at this time, but who knows what missteps lie in Karen's future. Frankly, I think she really blew it with SB 7. I keep hoping she will learn from her mistakes, but she hasn't shown that yet.
Our Mayor has a second job
Looks like our mayor will be Obama's unofficial campign mananger (last night and today on the news)...seems that our city doesnt have enough problems and causes...now he has time to go to IOWA and campign for Obama? I dont get it at all? Less than a year on the job and he is in IOWA helping the president? Mayor...fix thy own city's problems...then worry about the President. Your school system is a mess..as you know...why not go clean a school or help some teachers raise money for school supplies that they are paying for themselves. Or look at the disasterous neighborhoods that look worse than Irak!! I dont think you are showing us that your are 100% invested in this city. Seems you still are worried about your career...more than the city.
Just like when you left to advance your career in Washington and rented out your house! Obama is your "former boss"..the people of chicago are your new boss....also, kind funny for a union buster to be talking at a democratic meeting...what has happened to this party??
