The worst-performing public schools in Detroit will be removed from the city's school system and run by a new state authority charged with turning them around within five years. The move, detailed Monday by Gov. Rick Snyder and other state leaders, is intended to test a new concept that may be expanded to improve other troubled schools around the state. Instructional superintendent Wayne Ryan, the former principal at Noyes Education Campus who drew acclaim from the District of Columbia Public Schools for dramatic test score gains and then investigative scrutiny for suspicious levels of answer sheet erasures, has resigned. In an e-mail to colleagues Friday evening, Ryan did not specify a reason for his departure, which became effective Monday. (The Washington Post)

Nine months ago, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a $100 million gift to improve public schools in Newark, N.J. The plan to spend the money is now taking shape, and a new superintendent is coming on board to lead the effort. But in New Jersey, initial jubilation over the gift has turned into protests, suspicion and a belief that students will never benefit from the money. Parents question transparency in the mayor reform plans and people are suspicious about who is making the decisions and whether they stand to profit. (NPR)

A private foundation has donated $1 million to the Los Angeles school district to help pay for several academic programs and new positions, officials said Friday. The Wasserman Foundation, headed by entertainment/sports entrepreneur Casey Wasserman, has donated more than $4.3 million to the district since 2009. It now pays for about 10 positions in the district. (Los Angeles Times)

New state rules in Georgia will prohibit teachers from getting a master's or doctorate at non-accredited institutions in order to qualify for the $6,000-per-year average pay bump for advanced degrees, which is also known as a "certification upgrade." (wctv.tv/AP)

Tell CPS: Keep Your Word!

We know that as teachers and paraprofessionals, we are in our schools every day -- working 50 and 60 hour weeks, coming in early and staying late -- all to ensure the best possible future for our kids. We've kept our promise to Chicago's kids. But today the newly appointed Chicago Board of Education voted to break its promise to us and not fund our 4% raises for the next and final year of our contract. We plan to fight the refusal to honor commitments to teachers and school professionals who help educate our children. We are appalled that, in contrast, the school board has no problem continuing to spend millions of dollars in toxic swaps to bankers and go along with the city's TIF program that takes $250Â million from schools every year and gives it directly to developers.

RSVP below to let us know that you will stand strong with your brothers and sisters. This is about more than just the money. It's about honesty and dignity. We demand respect and together we will get it.

why oh why are they there? They hurt instruction, cause (s0me) lawsuits and treat teachers poorly and some, meanly.

Except that the Mayor doesn't have a plan for what to do with a longer school day. It's just a sound-bite that plays well with certain parts of the community.

Contracts are not to be broken. In other states they are not reopening contracts to stop giving teachers their raises. The are cutting those people out of the classrooms. Some Principals are spending their money on technology instead of saving teachers jobs. They are increasing classrooms and spending money on positions outside of the classrooms;like gym, art, music. I thought Mr. Brizard said have all day preschools and not to bother the classrooms. Some Principals are not doing this. They are fibbing to their teachers; and wouldn't tell their teachers what they are going to be teaching. Were teachers supposed to leave their schools with a Blank Organization Sheet for next year. I thought Mr. Brizard told Principals to give them the Organization sheet the Union requires them to do. Principals played dirty pool and gave their teachers a sheet with room numbers and no names on them. Just left their teachers hanging. Names should have been on those Organization Sheets. Can the Union request that teachers be given the correct sheets. Or can Mr. Brizard request Principals give their Staff the correct sheets. Budget money went out. But the unfair Principals says that the Board is going to cut positions. Is this true?
