Even as CPS opens more new schools, children with special needs have a tougher time finding options. Placements in private therapeutic schools are scarce, and some charters are reluctant to enroll them.

Regarding Brizard's contract, the Tribune reported Monday evening that it's still not done because lawyers representing Brizard and lawyers representing CPS are still talking. The mayor's office referred calls to CPS. Brizard's last day as superintendent of Rochester's public school system was May 13. Since May 17, he has been working on transition matters in CPS for free.

Illinois saves up to $530 million each year from its investments in preschool programs for children ages three to five, according to a new study commissioned jointly by the Ounce of Prevention Fund, Voices for Illinois Children and Illinois Action for Children, and conducted by the Minnesota-based Wilder Research Group. One example of the savings includes $172 million to $259 million annually in reduced government spending and increased tax revenues resulting from fewer juvenile arrest and cases of child abuse, reduced costs in adult criminal justice and improved employment outcomes.

In the nation
For years, Bill Gates focused his education philanthropy on overhauling large schools and opening small ones. His new strategy is more ambitious: overhauling the nation’s education policies. To that end, the foundation is financing educators to pose alternatives to union orthodoxies on issues like the seniority system and the use of student test scores to evaluate teachers. (The New York Times)
On Monday the nonprofit organization Teach Plus, which was highlighted in the New York Times story about the influence of Bill Gates in education reform, changed its “Why We Exist” statement on its Web site in regard to the importance of teachers in student success, the Washington Post's Answer Sheet reports.

In the News: Brizard's contract still not finalized; Bill Gates
What is going on? CPS gets Illinois to pass legislation to "curb" teacher rights and salaries? Gets 100's of congressmen to make special regulations but you cant tell this guy your contract is as follows: Just like our teachers and Principals have a pay schedule why doesn't he?? Does he have a one man union?? This isnt the NFL or NBA...take or leave it Brizard....there are 100s of qualified people waiting behind you! I once waited one day to call back a school for a teaching job and they gave it away!!
Here is your offer...take it or leave it
230k a year
Medical will be deducted just as all teachers
2 weeks vacation first year
Same pension plan as all teachers (which can change at any time)
Something tells me there is more to this than Rahm and Brizard are telling us..??
In the News: Brizard's contract still not finalized; Bill Gates
it will be outrageous! he has lawyers working on this? he is currently working for free? the old board is going to approve him WITHOUT a contract or daytoday compensation brought to the public? Rahm must really feel Chgo citizens will lick his shoes. sorry to use such an image, but how does this not get people angry? City on the take and make. Thank you Catalyst for keeping an eye on this--but unless Broad, Gates, Stand, Pritzker, or Rahm are going to pay him out of their own coffers, this guy should get no more than Huberman got. he has the same work to do with a decrease in students and teachers. The money has to be GREAT or he would not even come here. Unless he has been promised something big in BHO future cabinet... Watch what he will get as an employ of CPS.

and caring professionals that huberman has kicked out. They will tell him where the skeletons are and they will be honest with him. The others will tell him what they think he wants to hear, or lie to him since they want to keep their jobs--he needs to know who these people are. However, he may end up being like Princess Diana, surrounded by the firm only to result in his failure--which will put smles on the faces of those in power at CO and the CAOs.

Someone writes: "CPS gets Illinois to pass legislation to 'curb' teacher ...salaries?"
What legislation was that? It doesn't exist.
I'm just as curious as anyone else to see what Rahm promised Brizzard to come to Chicago, but there's no sense in making up facts. Surely, Rahm offered him more than he was currently making in Rochester. You don't get someone to leave one position, move his family halfway across the country, to take another position without offering more salary and benefits.
There are already a handful of Illinois superintendents of far smaller size than Chicago's who make more money than the head of CPS. Further, unlike Vallas, Duncan, and Huberman, Brizzard is actually qualified to get an Illinois superintendent's certificate. Of course, he's going to be paid more than Huberboy, and deservedly so.
And I can't believe someone would actually want the head of CPS to be paid from private funds. In such a case, he would be answerable to those funding his salary, and not the taxpayers of the City of Chicago.
In the News: Brizard's contract still not finalized; Bill Gates
and his benefits and anyone else he gets to bring on board, Rahm will not want another controversy. (hopefully, catalyst et al will be able to really get the real compensation package without FOIAing for months.) There already is a big problem and controversy with school superintendant pay in Il and in so many other states Danny. it does not strike you odd that they old board will approve him without a contract, w/o revealing a day rate and the new Board will approve next month? If it smells like rot...

In the News: Brizard's contract still not finalized; Bill Gates
I was a litte exaggeration I meant really that if CPS and Rahm can sway Illinois Legislature to pass SB 7 curbing our bargaining rights ...which will lead to lower salary for sure.....making it harder to strike....it isnt going to make us any richer...lets face it....why cant they just tell one guy ...here is your salary take it or leave it....
Sorry Danny...my reall point is....why does this guy hold so mucho power over CPS???
In the News: Brizard's contract still not finalized; Bill Gates
In all of the Brizard bio's I have read to this point, not one says exactly how long he was a teacher. Please don't read this as looking for a negative, just very very curious.

Re: above
According to press reports, JC Brizard worked in the NYC public schools for 21 years. He became principal at George Westinghouse Career & Technical Education HS in June 1999 and Region 8 assistant superintendent in 2003. He left NYC for Rochester in January 2008.
Thus, he worked approximately 8-1/2 years in administrative jobs in NYC during his 21-year tenure. The arithmetic tells us he taught about a dozen years.
