John Easton has been confirmed by the Senate as the new director of the Institute of Education Sciences at the Department of Education. Easton, the outgoing executive director and one of the founders of the Consortium on Chicago School Research at the University of Chicago, was nominated to the post by President Barack Obama in March.

John Q. Easton has been confirmed by the U. S. Senate as the new director of the Institute of Education Sciences at the Department of Education. Easton, the outgoing executive director and one of the founders of the Consortium on Chicago School Research at the University of Chicago, was nominated to the post by President Barack Obama in March. As director of the Institute of Education Sciences, Easton will oversee four national research centers, partnerships with other institutions and a staff of about 200. The Institute funds research studies on improving achievement, evaluates federal education programs and reports a wide variety of statistics, including the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The Consortium has earned a national reputation for its research and this week hosted a conference with officials from school districts from around the country that have expressed interest in launching similar research institutions.
