All of the school closings will be debated at public hearings over the next few weeks. Hearings will be at CPS Central Office, 125 S. Clark St., 5th floor board chambers, unless otherwise noted.

Feb. 4: Miles Davis and Johns Middle, 3-6 p.m.

Feb. 6: Midway, 3-6 p.m.; Abbott, 7-10 p.m.

Feb. 7: Orr, 3-6 p.m.; Howe, 7-10 p.m.; Midway, 5-8 p.m. at Hancock High, 4034 W. 56th St.

Feb. 8: Morton Career, 3-6 p.m.; Edison Regional Gifted, 5-8 p.m. at Edison, 6220 N. Olcott Ave.

CPS CEO Arne Duncan announced plans to close, phase out, relocate or consolidate 11 underutilized schools. The under-enrolled schools are:

• Gladstone, 1231 S. Damen Ave., which has just 287 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 8th. The school building would close and students would be reassigned to Smyth Magnet, 1059 W. 13th Place, about 1.25 miles away, and Plamondon, 2642 W. 15th Place, just over 1 mile away, or attend other nearby schools.

NEW SCHOOLS STAFF With 21 more schools slated to open this fall, the Office of New Schools is adding staff. Catherine Sugrue, formerly management support director for Area 1, takes over as Director of School Support, replacing Beatriz Rendon, who left the district to become CEO of Educational Support Services for the Tucson, Ariz., Unified School District. Cybill Ortiz, formerly a special education teacher at Spry, is the new support coordinator for performance and contract schools.
