Chicago Public Schools has a record number of studentsâ€” close to 140,000â€” enrolled in summer school this year. More than 30,000 are enrolled in Summer Bridge, a mandatory program for 3rd-, 6th- and 8th-graders whose scores on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills are too low for them to be promoted to the next level.
Last year, Bridge enrollment was 25,072. School Board officials attribute the increase to the higher cut-off scores required for promotion this year.
Other remedial programs, such as Early Intervention for 1st- and 2nd-graders, account for another 20,000 students....
