Adolescent Literacy

A raft of past programs have failed to substantially improve the reading skills of middle grade and high school students. CPS is trying once again, as part of a federal project that aims to help teens learn how to analyze complex non-fiction.

Michelle Reininger was astonished to read a report claiming that nationally, only half of those who complete traditional teacher preparation programs end up in the classroom. Thinking that a negative student teaching experience might be partly to blame, she decided to research student teaching and teamed up with Chicago Public Schools. Her study includes surveys of student teachers both before and after their placement. The study is in its second year and is still ongoing.

Officials say 270 current and aspiring principals have applied to go through a new, intensive screening process to qualify for principal vacancies in the Chicago Public Schools. 

CPS had set a Jan. 31 deadline for candidates to apply to undergo the new screening process, a prerequisite for placement in the district's pool of eligible candidates. The new process went into effect Jan. 1 and applies to all principal applicants, including current CPS principals who want to switch schools.
