Special Education

Even as CPS opens more new schools, children with special needs have a tougher time finding options. Placements in private therapeutic schools are scarce, and some charters are reluctant to enroll them.

Save The Date - October 15, 2009

As

you’ve probably heard, our 5th Annual ACE Tech Gala is scheduled

October 15, 2009. We’ve set a $200,000 goal for this year, and we really need you to consider supporting our event at one of the levels described at http://gala.acetechnical.org.

I

feel confident in asking for your support because of your connection

with our mission to introduce minority and low-income youth to

architecture, construction, and engineering (ACE) careers. In fact, we

believe that many of Chicago’s future ACE professionals will come from

the students we serve today. Here are just a few facts about ACE Tech:

A

Class of 2008 Graduate not only placed fifth in the NFTE

Entrepreneurship College, but also received a full scholarship to

Morehouse College.

ACE Tech’s Class of 2009 Valedictorian was a young Latina Woman focused on becoming an architect.

ACE

Tech students interested in engineering as a career can take up to two

full years of high-school level engineering courses. These students

engage in a wide variety of problem-based learning scenarios designed

to test their skills in real-world scenarios.

ACE

Tech students apply their building trades skills through various

projects in and around the school. Projects include painting,

repairing, and other tasks critical for operational success.

Over 27 11th and 12th Grade students had paid architecture, constructing, or engineering internships over the summer.

We

know we’ve only scratched the surface with these results, as we need to

provide significantly more ACE-bound graduates each year. Doing so

takes many unique resources, however, including special supplies,

materials, and qualified teachers.  Unfortunately, charter schools like

ours receive less public funding than “traditional” public schools –

thus making it difficult for us to obtain these needed resources.

This should give you a sense of the financial pressures we face. Not

only do we serve a unique mission, but we do so with a budget that is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than other public schools. Thus, we rely on industry professionals like you to help make ends meet.

You can support our event in many ways this year.

I

hope I can count on your support this year, as the “Road to Success” is

always under construction here at ACE Tech. Your help will make that

journey a little smoother.

Sincerely,

Geri Harston
