"Patrick began his remarks by recalling the teachers who
took a personal interest in him, including a sixth-grade
teacher in the Chicago public schools who reached out to
children from "broken circumstances." "She taught us to count to 20 in German, she took us
to the first opera I'd ever seen," Patrick said,
adding that she and others "made it possible for a kid
from the south side of Chicago to become a citizen of the
world." (Governor meets with educators). Great story. Anyone know where Deval Patrick went, and who taught him in 6th grade?

Massachusetts Governor Praises 6th Grade CPS Teacher
Deval Patrick's teacher was Mrs. Eddie Quaintance, who created a gifted program at Terrell School, was a creative, innovative, and challenging teacher who enriched the learning and lives of many students. She continued to inspire and expand learning when she worked for the Center for Urban Education after she retired due to lupus. I first met Eddie Quaintance at a workshop many years ago on profiling economies. She asked if she could have her students profile the Robert Taylor community as her project. She took that project forward so brilliantly that the children not only gained knowledge but self-esteem. That became the model for the Center's "Community "Math" project that was funded by ISBE. So her work reached other schools. The Center for Urban Education was fortunate that Eddie Quaintance was able to work for us despite her illness. When she died I lost a great friend and Chicago a remarkable educator, but her work multiplies today.
