Facing History and Ourselves: Holocaust and Human Behavior Seminar

Join Facing History and Ourselves for a five-day seminar on the Holocaust and Human Behavior. Together we will explore the range of choices leading up to World War II and examine how hatred, indifference, and denial – as well as caring, compassion, and responsibility – shape communities past and present. Participants will come away with teaching strategies and resources that can be implemented in the classroom immediately, primary source documents, and activities that meet the Common Core State Standards. Educators will explore the complexities of human behavior, as well as how communities and families can reckon with mass violence and trauma and strive to build more just, stable communities. Past participants say Facing History’s professional development allows them to help students make connections to their own lives, understanding through their study of history that our past is not inevitable but the result of the choices, large and small, leaders and everyday citizens have made over time. All seminar participants receive complete, free access to Facing History’s educator resources, including downloadable unit plans, lessons, and online tools. In addition, participants are invited to borrow videos, DVDs, and books from Facing History’s lending library. Each participant is assigned a Facing History program associate, who is available to provide ongoing support services. Scholarships are available for Chicago Public Schools teachers. There is a $50 registration fee.

Summer Teacher Institute: Museums and Migration

Presented in collaboration with the Jane Adams Hull-House Museum, the DuSable Museum, and the National Museum of Mexican Art, this three day institute introduces educators to techniques used in museums to analyze and interpret American art with the goals of developing close reading, critical thinking, and other skills emphasized in the Common Core State Curriculum. Additionally, classroom teachers will hear from teacher teams who have developed curricula on the themes of identity, movement, and migration as part of the Terra Foundation's American Art at the Core of Learning project. Teachers will practice incorporating looking strategies into their own classroom and will have time to develop lessons using American art as a foundation. Free, but space is limited. This course is open to CPS teachers in grades 5–12 only. Please register in advance. http://smartmuseum.uchicago.edu/calendar/register/ Emphasis on the following Essential Questions • How do different communities come together, collaborate, and clash? • How did we become “a land of opportunity” (and for whom?) • How does my individual identity influence my community’s identity? • How does identity reflect perspective? • Are there differences in expectations of a new place and the reality of a new place? • Does diversity create compromise or conflict?
