Summit on Counsel for Children During Police Interrogations

Did you know in Illinois children can be interrogated by the police regarding homicide without an attorney or even a parent present to advise them? Current law requires only that a parent of an arrested child be notified and the child be given Miranda warnings prior to questioning by police. Join us as we examine the impact of the 2008 European Court of Human Rights decision extending counsel to children (and adults) in Europe during police interrogations and its implications for children in Illinois, particularly those at risk of adult trial and incarceration. Jodie Blackstock, Barrister in England, and Director of Criminal and EU Justice Policy at JUSTICE is joining us from the UK to share her extensive research and practice in this area. Renowned local experts will join her for a panel discussion comparing European practices to the U.S. The summit is free. ($10 suggested donation to support the work of the Juvenile Justice Initiative.) 1 hour CLE credit available to Illinois lawyers for $35. Registration: http://jjevents.eventbrite.com
