Adolescent Literacy

A raft of past programs have failed to substantially improve the reading skills of middle grade and high school students. CPS is trying once again, as part of a federal project that aims to help teens learn how to analyze complex non-fiction.

Overall, 31 percent of Latino students surveyed said they had never met with their counselor, compared to 16 percent of Asian students and 17 percent of white students.

But not all CPS seniors are so lucky. Last year, only 1,439 seniors in career education had access to a program that combines job preparation classes with workplace internships. Education-to-careers coordinators say good internships are hard to find.

Last month, state Sen. Miguel del Valle introduced a bill that would prohibit high schools from permanently dropping chronic truants from their rolls.

Under the proposed law, chronic truants between the ages of 16 and 19 who are failing could be dropped from school attendance rolls for only one semester. Schools would then be required to re-admit those students, or so-called pushouts, if they choose toreturn.
