Mon May 12, 2008 at 4:10 PMBy: Curriculum for diplomacy at Senn? Monday Morning News, Part 2 A high school curriculum targeting a career in diplomacy? Now lets get real here. Senn High School is not going to become Georgetown. In order to enter the foreign service you need a relatively serious political science degree, history degree, or international business degree plus strong foreign language skills. Right now the languages for foreign service officers being hired are Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Hindi, Mandarin Chinese,Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chinese (Cantonese), Korean, Kyrgyz, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Kurdish, Russian, Tajik, Turkish, Turkmen, Uzbek, and Urdu. Having been in the US military also helps, you get points for service.

You must also pass the Foreign Service Officer Test covering current world and national affairs, economics, history, public affairs, and management. You must also write an essay on an assigned topic, if you get through these two then you must pass a day long oral assessment, a major security clearance, and then approval by a State Department Review pannel.

High schools can not prep students for the foreign service this is a total dream. The only schools in Chicago that are producing graduates that have a shot at entering the Foreign Service are selective schools like Young, Payton, and Northside. Diplomacy is not a career path that can be set via some type of vocational program at the high school level. This curriculum sounds like a fraud.

Ironically, the principal, Karen Bradley poured her heart into developing a charter school in Chicago--only to be passed over as its principal. She took off to the 'burbs, where they treat teachers better and now she's running a nice little school that is diverse, green and safe...

Mothers on a Mission is in Berwyn, but they might know someone with expertise with Hispanic families in Chicago and CPS.
