Instead of just supporting Afterschool Matters, or a CPS based after school strategy, city leaders, in business, churches, colleges, hospitals, can be taking a role of making such programs available, in more places, starting by providing more consistent support to all existing programs. But the critical factor is how will this mentoring link up with schools these kids attend? Will the mentors become educational advocates for these kids, will they make them go to school when they want to go hang in the hood, will they call the police if they find out their mom has dope in the house, will they really want to get involved to the extent necessary to make a difference?
