Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? From a reader:  " I have a son who is eight, and will be aging out of Daniel C Beard (a wonderful school) in one year. Do you know which schools on the North Side have decent autism programs? I wanted to start looking early. If you have any suggestions or links I would be grateful. (My son is verbal but struggles with behavior issues, such as tantrums. He is not aggressive but I do not think he could be mainstreamed yet.)"

Can anyone help out?

Tue Apr 1, 2008 at 10:31 AMBy: Rod Estvan Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? Agassiz School located at 2851 N. Seminary has the oldest and generally considered to be the best program in Chicago. However, since the student is currently placed at Beard the parent must negoiate placements with OSS. Children with significant disabilities can apply to CPS option schools like any other parents, but just based on what has been posted it appears this student will require a specialized program.

By the 2009 school year the new Renissance 2010 Hope Institute School should be accepting students, but I do not know what ages. This school will be using what is called the ABA approach. At this time CPS and the Institute are deciding exactly how students with autism will be admitted to this new school, which will have an inclusion component to it. My understanding is that the school will likely be located in the old Spaulding building.

I would also recommend that the parents contact the Autism Program to get additional recommendations. One component of this state funded program is the TAP Training Center at the University of Illinois Chicago I would recommend calling Dawn LaBrose (MSW) 312-413-4624 to see her recommendations. Easter Seals of Metro Chicago can also be a resource. They can be reached at 866-448-2372.

I would not limit my search to CPS schools, I would strongly recommend looking at better funded suburban options in addition to CPS, even though it would require moving.

Tue Apr 1, 2008 at 1:49 PMBy: hs Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? The Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences has a HS instructional classroom. Not elementary, but good to know.
Tue Apr 1, 2008 at 2:12 PMBy: Lia Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? I teach at McPherson Elem. located in the Ravenswood community. Our autism program is awesome. The teachers working with the autistic students do a fabulous job. I would recommend coming in and observing. We have classrooms for primary, intermediate, and upper grade students. Hope this is helpful!
Tue Apr 1, 2008 at 8:51 PMBy: EL Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? Move out of the city!!! Programs are started and then they die out. Look at the Harbor Program at Lane. That was to take place of the private school Cove. Several suburbs have special schools for these children. These schools understand Autism. They know that these children need special schools with different teaching methods. The parents that send their children there are concerned with preparing their children for the future. Children with Autism need teachers who specialize in Autism. The teacher aides are also trained to work with these children. Most of our aides have no training. Most of these children leave these schools and attend regular high schools.
Wed Apr 2, 2008 at 2:45 PMBy: Kate Goetz Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? I'm the chairperson of the Local School Council at Agassiz, and I didn't know our autism program was the "oldest and generally considered to be the best" program in Chicago- but I did know the program is better than decent. My child is not in the autism program, but I know the autism teachers and like and respect them a lot, I see the kids and their teachers when I'm around the building and like what I see, and I like the way inclusion has been handled with my daughter's classes- they do a great job of sensitively educating the regular ed kids about autism.

Sun Apr 6, 2008 at 11:09 AMBy: LSCs and special education Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? Good to hear Agassiz LSC president is aware and positive about the autism program. To what extent do LSCs in general "care" about how their school is identifying and educating students with special needs? How does this play out in Chicago?
Tue Apr 8, 2008 at 12:19 AMBy: Hmmm, why can't schools have Diabetes Programs Schools With Decent Autism Programs In CPS? Instead of making teachers, librians, clerks, janitors, etc. take care of students with diabetes why can't we have schools with diabetes programs (with appropriate licensed healthcare professionals-nurses) like the Autism programs.

Wouldn't that be a good alternative? Read the following and tell your legislators.

Vote No to HB 5960

Friday Morning News
Urgent Action Needed-Call, Fax, Email Today

Illinois legislators are again trying to force School Employees into the role of Diabetes Care Aide. The legislators would rather make school employees act as Nurses instead of hiring more nurses. Therefore, we the employees, parents, etc. must tell them that we want them to VOTE NO to HB 5960 on April 09, 2008.

If you let this bill pass the principals will have the authority to delegate that you do the daily blood glucose testing; give Insulin injections, monitor carbohydrate intake. If you wanted to be a nurse, you would have been a nurse.

There are people in Springfield fighting these bills but they need your help. Call, fax, email the following members of the Human Service Committee

Tell them to VOTE NO TO HB 5960 on April 09, 2008 because:

·The Diabetes Care Aide Acts violate the law, 225 ILCS, The Nurse Practice Act

·Unlicensed school employees do not have the knowledge base to safely act in this capacity.

·It is dangerous and will be harmful to the children
