Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 2:13 PMBy: eury Tuesday Morning News Ugh. The article on getting into a magnet gave me an ulcer. And my son just turned three. We found the cheapest townhouse in the best school district we could. I just can't handle that kind of stress.

What I need from the experts on this blog (which I read but almost never post to) is to explain to me why the magnet system is the way to go versus trying to improve all our neighborhood schools. Seriously. There is no sarcasm or anything in that request. I would love to know why this crazy (to me) system of buses criss-crossing the city, parents working to improve their local schools only to have them become magnets (Drummond?), or parents working to improve their local schools only to then shut out the kids who had been traveling there (Oscar Mayer?) is considered the best way to go. Why magnets? Why? I'd love to know. I mean, even though we're automatically in Lincoln, I get all stressed out about thinking we should apply to LaSalle, for whatever slim chance we have, as it's practically next door. That's just crazy! It's just so easy to get caught up in the fervor.

I'm sorry for all the stress parents are feeling right now.
Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 4:17 PMBy: iteach2 Tuesday Morning News As a teacher/parent, I think that many of these stressed out parents don't even consider their neighborhood school. The neighborhood school may meet the child's needs but they are the same people who think that only Harvard will do when NIU may be more appropriate. Eury, your child will probably be fine in any school. Go visit schools. I think you will find that many will meet your needs.
Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 9:24 PMBy: M Tuesday Morning News Eury, I would choose a strong neighborhood school over any magnet for so many reasons, not least of which is the convenience and sense of community that results from walking my child to school and to playdates with classmates, ease of sharing afterschool care with other parents, and much more.
Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 9:56 PMBy: dog in the hood Tuesday Morning News The Trib education reporter is such a lapdog. She leaves the crazy situation of parents searching for "good" schools unchallenged. Does she forget that she could be a watchdog for the public's right to public education? Maybe she needs to get out of the office more and into the neighborhoods.
Tue Feb 26, 2008 at 10:15 PMBy: Loco Parentis Tuesday Morning News Their are too many fake parents who think they are parents and use the term loco parentis. If you have ever gone to previous City Wide Title I, Parent Advisory Council meetings, you will see grandparents. They are not parents or legal guardians but take advantage of the 1 percent of dollars allocated to parents of children enrolled at schools.
