Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan
It's not just the folks from the 19 schools that are proposed to be turned around that should show up at next week's hearings.  There are at least 10 other schools that will be affected by the proposed changes, most of them in the form of having to take in a new set of kids:

"Receiving" schools are in BOLD:  Gladstone Elementary, 1231 S. Damen, 287 students, pre-k through grade 8. School would close, attendance boundary would be reassigned to Smyth Magnet School, 1059 W. 13th and Plamondon, 2642 W. 15th Place.  Johns Middle Academy, 6936 S. Hermitage Ave., 308 students, grades 4-8. One of two schools to be consolidated into new Miles Davis, 6740 S. Paulina. Miles Davis Academy, 6723 S. Wood, 306 students, pre-k through grade 3. Would be consolidated into new Miles Davis magnet school, along with Johns Middle Academy students. Anderson Elementary, 1148 N. Honore St., 580 students, pre-k through grade 8. School would eventually be phased out; new students would attend Pritzker Elementary, 2009 W. Schiller St. Midway Academy, 5434 S. Lockwood Ave., 90 students, grades 2-8. School would close, children would attend neighborhood schools (unspecified). Carver Middle School, 801 E. 133rd Pl., 244 students, grades 5-8. Would consolidate with Carver Primary, 901 E. 133rd Place, which is located next door. De La Cruz, 2317 W. 23rd Pl., 102 students, grades 7-8. Would be consolidated with Finkl Elementary, 2332 Western Ave. Abbott Elementary, 3630 S. Wells St., 99 students, pre-k through grade 8. Would be consolidated with Graham Elementary, 4436 S. Union Ave. Irving Park Middle School, 3815 N. Kedvale Ave., 348 students, grades 7-8. Would be phased out; new students in the fall would attend Marshall Middle School, 3900 N. Lawndale Ave. Edison Regional Gifted Center, 6220 N. Olcott Ave., 274 students, pre-k through grade 8. Would be relocated to Albany Park Multicultural Academy, 4929 N. Sawyer Ave., but would remain a "regional gifted center." Roque De Duprey Elementary, 1405 N. Washtenaw Ave., 235 students, grades 1-8. Would be relocated to Von Humboldt Elementary, 2620 W. Hirsch, one block away. Based on Chi-Town Daily list.

That's a shame. I have some familiarity with Irving Park Middle School. They have a strong math curriculum. In contrast, Marshall is beholden to the NMSA which treats academics as incidental and a nuisance.
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 2:34 AMBy: George N. Schmidt Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan Irving Park Middle School is being closed to make way for more students to "choose" the Chicago International Charter School, Irving Park campus. The pretext of "underutlization" is just there to aid and abet the charterization of the north end of town. Nobody in the community asked that "Chicago International Charter School Irving Park Campus" be opened (except, perhaps, the entrepreneurs at Immaculate Heart of Mary). Since they got the green light, the CICS people have been bad mouthing and undermining the local public elementary schools. Right now, their marketing department is hard at work.

Oh, and "New Schools" provided the CICS "campus" with the names of the "best" students from Reilly, Murphy and Belding, so that the raids would be done more efficiently.

Irving Park Middle School is not being executed (and slandered publicly; watch what happens down the road) because of "underutilization". If sanity were the case, Irving Park Middle School would be expanded as an experiment in how to do middle schooling sanely, with all the extra space utilized at the behest of teachers, parents, students and possibly community.

But that's not Arne and Rufus's agenda, and the aldermen (and ladies) are going along with it despite their claims to be union friendly and pro public school. CPS is helping clear the market on behalf of CICS. And down the road, as the charter schools first sabotage local public schools (by creaming the "top" students and leaving the publics with massive numbers of special education and other challenging students) and then attack them directly, Duncan will use the "underutilization" mantra to close down and replace additional public schools that are in the path of the charter school juggernaut backed by corporate Chicago and tens of millions of dollars in CPS and quasi-private money.
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 3:06 AMBy: Where is your proof, George? Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan George, do you have any proof that New Schools provided the information on the "best" students to CICS? or are you just making a baseless accusation? You call yourself a journalist, but rather, you are a propagandist, taking your own personal beliefs and conspiracy theories to extreme levels. Show us some proof, or keep your comments to yourself. Something tells me that you will respond with something like: "I don't need to prove anything to anyone who posts under a cloak of anonimity." This is a nice "out" to fall back on, but doesn't excuse your accusations made without even an inkling of proof.
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 6:24 AMBy: clown Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan the proof is the closings themselves central office clown!

the law is free and appropriate education for all.

Closing open enrollment neighborhood schools is opposite the law.

ILLEGAL!
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 12:56 PMBy: CICS aren't that great Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan I'm sick of the CICS dog and pony show. Half of there campuses are doing no better than the neignborhood CPS schools. Look at there test data...the ones on the southside have way lower scores than the northside. I'll admit that the CICS schools on the north are doing better than the southside schools. Combining the scores so the high acheiving schools pull up the low achieving schools is genius. Check out this link--some of the campuses scores get lower each year and the reading scores are garbage

Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 4:56 PMBy: parents from CICS Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan What campus does your child attend and do you like the school?
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 7:05 PMBy: George N. Schmidt Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan The easiest way to find out when CICS is opening another "campus" is to check when the Catholic Church is closing down another school. A one-to-one match. Of course, it's just coincidence. Similarly, it's coincidence when their marketing department starts calling the top kids from your school, and even visiting families at their homes and churches, scheduling meetings like they were selling Amway or Tupperware.
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 8:07 PMBy: I guess CICS Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan I guess CICS parents don't read this blog. Maybe if they did they wouldn't send their children to this charter school. I asked a while ago for CICS parents to post and they haven't. Have any parents taken their children out of a CICS school? Tell us why. Maybe I can get a response on that one...
Fri Feb 1, 2008 at 10:03 PMBy: unite16outof50 Ten More Schools On The Receiving End Of CPS Plan When did all the "underutilization" focus begin? When test scores were improving against odds and they had to find another reason to rearrange and close schools? Or better yet phase schools out so they can displace the existing children and replace them. Look closely at the population being removed and the new ones coming into the schools.

If you are one of the 16 schools being closed or phased out this year...are you doing anything at your school to have a voice? Preparing for hearings? Meeting with the Board? Making signs and marching? Calling on your political leaders to support you? Having meetings? Calling the media?

Who closed or phased last year? Didn't hear much about it...Who closed? Who phased? Please post so we can all have a voice.

Get out of your schools and March on Monday and Tuesday...pick a time and make posters. Alert the media of the time...take pictures b/c media might not show then submit.
