The Destruction Of Jacob Riis Elementary
It's timely that this picture from November 2006 of the abandoned Jacob Riis ES is on the Chicago Magazine website this month, as part of a collection of online pictures about Chicago. Someone named Carey Primeau (Flickr alias: Primeau) took the shot, and said this: "My photographs are an attempt at reversing the unproductive trend of neglect and demolition. This photo reflects the frustrations I have about Chicago's public education system."
Pictures are beautiful. It is hard to lie. When something is in front of you.
I have several others if you want them. Particularly moving is some graffiti that was once on the east side of the building: "We love you, Riis." The street adjacent to the Riis site is also named after a legendary Riis teacher, who devoted her life to children. Let's assume that soon the streets will even be renamed for those who are making millions of dollars by wrecking places like Riis.
Riis was destroyed because CPS was working with the developers along Taylor St., not in the interest of the children. All the doubletalk from the Duncan administration can't hide those facts, and a little research and investigation would show all the links, including the Chicago-style corruption.
The Riis story is a microcosm of how the city's poor children have been fleeced since Daley took over, and especially since Arne Duncan began in 2001.
I'm attaching some of my Riis photos for Alexander's consideration.
