Learning First -- Math Benchmark Assessment Week [img=/assets/blog/200712/testing.web.jpg F:L ]This week and next is the window for the 2nd round of math and reading assessments. How are they going? Do they really take just an hour? Does they track with the ISAT like it's supposed to? Any better or worse than last year? BTW, I heard that they do these things FIVE times a year in New York.

Fri Dec 14, 2007 at 7:35 AMBy: Steve Learning First -- Math Benchmark Assessment Week How about the Reading Learning First test? What a crock of s#@*! The vocabulary questions are so tricky, no wonder my kids fail these. I teach them to use context clues and I have them memorize the roots and affixes listed on the ISBE Assessment Framework: http://www.isbe.net/assessment/pdfs/iaf_reading.rtf

Yet one question, for example, was totally dependent on the student knowing the root word 'terra' which is not listed for ANY GRADE 3-8 on the ISBE Framework. Why we pay money for these Learning First exams, which don't test what they should be testing, is ridiculous. Illinois tells us what they will test us on, then they hire a company that plays by different rules. THANKS!
