Arne's Early Holiday Gift Apparently -- believe it when you see it -- those raises that are in the new contract are finally going to start showing up on teachers' paychecks before too much longer. Word is that PSRPs get the raises starting this week (December 7th) and teachers next week (December 14th). Yes retroactive to July 1. Yes, for all salaries and stipends. But again, believe it when you see it, and check your paycheck carefully.
More than 40,000 people have earned those raises. They've been due since July 1 (the official date the new union contracts began) and September 15 (the latest date the contracts were approved).
If anything, Arne Duncan has been the Scrooge who has disrupted the lives of thousands of people who've been underpaid -- and tens of thousands who are owed their back pay -- since his incompetence and cronyism birthed the new payroll software (in March) and its inability to factor in the new pay scales (since September 15 when all the union contracts were final). And by September 15, CPS should have had all the formulas ready to go. In a "data driven" system it's ludicrous to claim that this central bit of data can be so screwed up for so long.
"Arne's Gift" indeed.
Fire the liar. Arne must go.
2. SecondYear. Last time things were this bad was Christmas 1979, when the financial top dogs foreclosed on CPS and we all went home without that holiday paycheck. They've been doing stuff like this a long time. But the real challenge is when you try to explain it to your family and non-CPS friends. Has anyone told you that it really hasn't happened, and that anyway, the Mayor and Arne Duncan are really doing a great job? After all, they read about it in the Tribune and hear it every day on TV. What could you know?
3. Which is why teacher, like cops, have our own bars we go to Fridays. After a drink or two you don't want to hear about how it "really is" from people who don't have a clue. The main difference is that teacher bars tend to be less rowdy than cop bars. After a week with the little ones, teachers don't want all that noise during coming down time.
