Bad Jokes, Bad Evaluations From OPPD? I love it when people send me things they get from downtown, even though I don't always get to them on time. Here's a little bit of seasonal humor sent out the week before Thanksgiving from Ted Williams on behalf of Gail Ward, the "new" head of OPPD (principal development, etc. -- formerly Barbara Laho). You can read it [att=thanksgiving_greetings.doc]here[/att]. The person who received it writes "I cannot believe that OPPD does not have anything better to do, especially with the horrid principal evaluation form they sent to the Board last month..."

Sat Dec 1, 2007 at 3:57 AMBy: George N. Schmidt Bad Jokes, Bad Evaluations From OPPD? Think about it for a moment. Given all the damage some principals can (and have) done, perhaps the less that OPPD does, the better. If anyone is interested, every Thanksgiving we could hold a contest for the principal who proved to be the biggest turkey of the year, but the competition would probably be so massive that it would require several different categories.

Despite the coverups, for example, the Wells High School mess is just one example of what happenes when Data Driven Management coincides with crony driven administration. Not every general high school completely screwed up its master program, then insulted the kids by awarding grades in serious classes for existing.

I'll take turkey cartoons to turkeys like these any time.

There are a lot of ways to package that word. It means so many different things to so many different people the true meaning is hard to pin down much less express in words.
As we enter the holiday season let me try to apply the word as an emotion.
For the first time in years the kids in my school are beginning to feel safe. Our new
Administration has in three months almost ended the descending cycle of violence and
regained control of the school. We have gangbangers like everybody else but they no
longer control the building. Fights are now conducted blocks away from school. I am not
naïve they have been smashed, expelled, crushed.
Conduct now carries consequences rules are simple and enforced. It is truly amazing
To watch our kids respond to all this. They are now free to be kids. Free to learn. We
Are now free to be teachers. All it took was a few good people.

At least you have those things at your school. My school is controlled by about 30 students. The administration is too busy trying to find out who is responsible for certain things. Overall, there are too many chiefs and not enough indians. My students and I are really fed up. My students don't have books. I had to purchase my box of paper since we weren't give one like in years past.
