"Duncan Donuts" Over at The Beachwood Reporter, Steve Rhodes recently had a post about schools CEO Arne Duncan that some of you will enjoy: "Yesterday I referred to crazy talk by Arne Duncan about making Chicago Public Schools the best district in the nation, but I couldn't find the original reference. Now found. It came from the Reader's Harold Henderson, who in turn had found Duncan saying this to Catalyst: 'Our goal is to become the best school system in America . . . not 10 years from now, but literally in the next two years, we have a chance to do that.' Let's try not totally sucking first before pretending Chicago schools on the whole can be better than New Trier within two years." Thu Dec 6, 2007 at 2:10 AMBy: George N. Schmidt "Duncan Donuts" Arne's been saying this "we're going to have the best school system in the USA" for the past couple of years.

What he (and Rufus Williams and Mayor Daley) actually say, however, is the best "urban" school system. So Daleyland is not in the running against New Trier.

Once we clairfy that they're saying "best urban school system" (whatever that means and however it's measured; go figure), I'm sure he's said it over and over at the City Club. I've heard him say it a number of times at CPS media events. Archival record? Since CPS Communications has back issues of some of their press releases (not all, for sure), I'm sure someone (why bother?) would be able to find it going to the CPS Website and going through that pile.

Arne's not the only person who says that "best urban school system" stuff, though. Since he began pushing "Renaissance 2010" on behalf of the Civic Committee and the Plutocracy, Richard M. Daley's been saying it, too.

If I'm not mistaken, I heard Arne and Daley both say it in October when they were on stage with Bill Ford (Ford Motor Co) at the Powerhouse charter school thing (the media event announcing "Powerhouse" would become a "Ford Learning Center").

I also think Arne said it a week after the Powerhouse hype at the dedication of the "Polaris" charter school (the one they raped the old Morse Elementary to establish on the West Side). The probably also said it at the dedication and groundbreaking for the "Marine Corps Math and Science Academy" in October. It's part of their scripts. They probably have it in boilerplate somewhere at CPS Communications and in Jackie Heard's laptops at City Hall.

And I bet they will say it when they announce (within the next 60 days) that they're going to close Orr High School (er, reorganize it, again, on the ruins of the failures of "Small Schools" and all those "Principal for a Day" gigs).

So just record what they say when they announce the nuking of Orr and don't tape over the record in your electronic notes.
