NAEP Scores Show IL (& CPS) Weaknesses There's a new report out showing that US kids don't do as well as other countries' kids in math and science. No big surprise, I know. But this one (PDF here) goes one level deeper, and shows how individual states do against other countries. On page 39, for example, there's a chart comparing Illinois 8th grade math results on NAEP to comparable proficiency rates of other countries. At 31 percent proficient, we're behind Estonia and Hungary and a bunch of Asian countries. For science (27 percent), it's a little bit worse. Sweden and the US average are ahead of Illinois. I have no idea what the NAEP proficiency rates are for CPS alone -- but we'll hear more about Chicago's NAEP scores tomorrow, when the urban NAEP comes out.
