Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party
A reader sent in these pics from the CTU website (see link here) with understandable questions about their appropriateness. What do you think? And is that really Ted Dallas with his arm around the sexy strumpets (who I assume are teachers)?

Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 8:48 AMBy: Shocked and appalled Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party Teachers and union officials actually dressed up in costumes for the CTU Halloween party? This is a travesty. I am shocked and appalled!

Give me a break.

A feather boa is hardly risque. One of the skirts is quite short but she's wearing full length opaque stockings underneath - not exactly scandalous. What, the referee shirt is unzipped too far? There's a full coverage tanktop underneath it. Maybe it's the cat ears that are the offending culprit.

So, what exactly is inappropriate?

The costumes don't bother me one bit. I'm much more disturbed by Mr. Russo calling these women strumpets - i.e. prostitutes, adulterers, harlots. That is what is truly inappropriate. If I was one of these women I would be *pissed*.

Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:19 AMBy: anonymous Ted Dallas & The CTU Halloween Party I am appalled by your innuendo of young FEMALE teachers being denigrated for being in the costume of their choice at a Halloween Party meant for networking with fellow teachers to have an enjoyable time. No mention was made of the male Field Rep, just a CTU VP who was a participant. The insinuation was obvious, presumptive and probably politically motivated.

The only thing that was untoward was your sexist, blatant comment that these dedicated teachers are sexy strumpets. Walk down Michigan Avenue at noon on a warm day and these lovely young women, in costume, will look like nuns compared to what is the norm for business wear.

Obviously, it was a slow news day for you. But that's no excuse for the perversion behind YOUR comments. I hope others respond...female AND male!
Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 2:20 PMBy: Charlie Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party Wow! Who knew people would get so worked up about some Halloween costumes? My question is, are these the only four teachers who were at this Halloween party? I'm not sure if you should be angry with Alexander's comments or CTU's choice to post only pictures of young, attractive women in what may be appropriate, but are certainly slightly over-sexualized costumes (at least the referee one).

I do have to agree that "strumpet" was not at all an appropriate word choice, although I think the CTU is as much to blame for this innuendo.
Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 4:55 PMBy: disgusted Ted Dallas & The CTU Halloween Party My question is, are these the only four teachers who were at this Halloween party?

And that would make a difference how? Even though there were at least 5...people keep forgetting that poor male field rep. How must he feel? Stupid question Charlie.

I'm not sure if you should be angry with Alexander's comments or CTU's choice to post only pictures of young, attractive women in what may be appropriate, but are certainly slightly over-sexualized costumes (at least the referee one).

"Appropriate, but certainly over-sexualized costumes (at least the referee one)." As a psychological social worker, I think you might want to seek some advice. To quote the first respondant:

"What, the referee shirt is unzipped too far? There's a full coverage tanktop underneath it. Maybe it's the cat ears that are the offending culprit.,what exactly is inappropriate?"

Schocked and appalled covered it.

"I do have to agree that "strumpet" was not at all an appropriate word choice, although I think the CTU is as much to blame for this innuendo."

And the CTU is to blame for holding a party that allows teachers to have fun on HALLOWEEN with other teachers? And dress in the costume of their choice? How are they, or the teachers to blame for a very sexist innuendo on the part of you and this blog? PLEASE...I'm sure many female teachers and staff would love for you to connect the dots for them!!!

The whole issue is they are attractive young professional women who are being negated because they are attractive, young and professional. Sexism at it's best.

Alexander really needs to deal with important issues like gangs recruiting special ed kids to deal drugs, etc. It's a huge problem that gets no media coverage and should. Now THERE is an educational issue of importance. This is not. Deal with your puberty issues in private.
Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 5:09 PMBy: anon Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I see Ted Dallas went as a used car salesman.
Oh no, wait, he always looks like that.
Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 5:17 PMBy: Charlie Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I think the question about these being the only four or five people at the party is important. Each picture has a different combination of the same women in it. It's an interesting choice of photographs is all I am saying and I am just wondering if this is representative of the actual attendance at the party or just how the CTU wants to represent the attendance at the party.

No one said you can't have fun on Halloween, I'm all for fun on Halloween. It's not a question in my mind of how these women are dressed...They can dress however they want, it is a question of how CTU decided to represent their teachers on a public web site. If this were up on a charter schools' web site I guarantee you that someone here would be slamming them for posting the pictures.

By the way there are no stupid questions, just condescending bloggers.

Ladies you are all beautiful
You are two lucky men.
Sister Mary Holy Water never looked like that
Careful people some of you are turning green
With envy.
Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 11:58 PMBy: anon mom Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party My children attend a CPS school and I'm not shocked! These teachers are blowing off dteam from the pressure cooker known as CPS!!! I doubt that they would wear these costumes if they knew it would show up on this blog! Who cares anyway...as long as they do there jobs as teachers!!
Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 5:57 AMBy: George N. Schmidt Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party The past two days here have been a wonderful example of two things and have resulted in something I never thought I'd be called on to do: Defend Ted Dallas.

First, the two things.

Certain kinds of "reporting" lend themselves to mindless adulation, without ever a look behind the Wizard's Screen. I first saw that when a tribe of scribes marched out to see the miracle at Marva Collins's school here in Chicago 20 years ago, and saw it again this morning with that "Gee Whiz" story about KIPP. If you want to know why I called Marva's narrative out as racist 20 years ago and still consider those tellings racist today, ask. Otherwise, my breath has better ways to spend itself.

Now to the Halloween Party and a bit of tabloid journalism.

Let's see.

The photograph is from a Halloween Party.

It's after hours and not in a school. It shows people -- including one officer of the Chicago Teachers Union (and one other staff member of the CTU whom you didn't recognize) -- of various ages socializing and having what appears to be a good time.

Despite the rush to drag us all back to the 1890s, that's not illegal yet. Unless there is some anachronistic rule I don't know about that says that teachers (we're assuming the other people in the photograph are teachers), I don't see why that particular bit of information merited any kind of reporting at all. Except, as noted, the smear.

Just about everyone here and elsewhere knows, I'm no fan of Ted Dallas or the current officers of the Chicago Teachers Union. But if anyone just might have thought that this blog was really pro corporate "school reform" (the Catalyst Party Line) and anti-union (ditto), this little foray into Halloween partying might be good evidence.

Want to perform a public service here, anyone?

Get a list of all the "Friday Bars" that real teachers (public, charter, other) go to when they have to "come down" from the week (and, often, get ready for class on the weekend).

I'm not talking about those hacks from Clark St. who go to the Italian Village and some of the other Loop and West Loop watering holes. Or where the "New Schools" crowd goes for some Rapturing.

Real teachers who just finished Report Card Pickup Week after surviving IMPACT and the rest of the CPS stupidities list, while the gangs are still rampant in Daleyland. Who doesn't need a drink after a week of that?

That bar list is a long list. Is that now fair game? Every teacher bar has its corporate cop?

While we are supposed to get bleary-eyed about a fascist "business model" (KIPP) for "school reform"?

I never thought something could inspire me to defend Ted Dallas, but between that KIPP worship and this Halloween post, you've done it.

And since we're on the subject of sex, how is it, Alexander, that you manage to miss the sexual abusers that go with deregulation, privatization and charterization -- whether at Oprah's South Africa school or at Chicago International Belden "campus" here in Chicago (now that Josef Nurek has pleaded guilty)? Adults having fun is a BAD THING if they're union, but deregulation letting abusers in the charter and Oprah doors is NOT A BAD THING (because at least they're not union?).

But that's a longer story for another thread here for another time.
Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 10:55 AMBy: Bernardo Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party Don't fret readers. It's just horny Russo drooling over women (and men?) "hottie" educators again. What is this guy doing with a blog at Catalyst?
Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 11:09 AMBy: alexander Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party i'm the horny one, bernardo? you should take a look at the pictures and think about who posted them. clearly i'm not the only one. as for "strumpets," it's obviously a description of how the women were dressed, not a description of them as people or as professionals. i continue to think that CTU's posting of the pics, and to some extent the pics themselves, are a little bit skeezy. others may think that blogging about them here is the worse offense. i wonder what ted and the others in the pics think......anyone know them?
Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 11:15 AMBy: prudence Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I didn't think it was drooling, I thought it was goosing, of the tabloid journalistic kind; I have observed in the past that Alexander seems to resort to this when comments/arguments/flame wars start simmering down.

Not too crazy about the implication that you long for the days when all female teachers were considered spinsters and expected to sweep up the classroom after school and sleep in the back room at night.

And not an especially genius way to deal with the chilling effect of being Brought to You by Catalyst...
Wed Nov 14, 2007 at 10:45 PMBy: Ward teacher Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party Rojek (with the boa) teaches at Ward.
Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 2:43 AMBy: George N. Schmidt Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party Which Ward, the one on Shields or the one on Monticello?
Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 8:25 AMBy: offtoday Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I think what disturbed me more was the comment from the first poster ("Shocked and Appalled") , what with the "opaque tights" and "full coverage tank". How about the comment give me the willies? That comment was written by some skivvy dude who was analyzing that photo entirely TOO long on some huge wide screen monitor. This is why teachers should think twice before wearing outfits like that on Halloween. Not because they don't have a right to do so...but because there are going to be some weird men on the Internet dissecting you down to to the pixel...
Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 9:47 AMBy: Background Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I don't want to add any fuel to the fire but look at the picture in the lower left quadrant on the ctu website. There is a guy with his hand in his pants standing behind the women.

Too much analyzing for me.
Thu Nov 15, 2007 at 10:47 AMBy: Background Silliness Ted Dallas & The Hot CTU Halloween Party I guess people will see what they want to see in these photos. The background comment is a good example.

The gentleman in the background does not have his hand in his pants. If you look carefully it's quite clear that his hand is outside of his pants and belt. If you have any doubts, just magnify the picture in any photo editing software.

This post has been a farce from the start.
